Paul Finebaum went after Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule for comments he made about the Big Ten’s superiority earlier this week.

While at the podium at Big Ten Media Days this week, Rhule called the Big Ten the “NFL of college football” claimed the league should get 4 College Football Playoff bids on an annual basis. He also said he believes the Big Ten is the best conference in the country, while acknowledging that the SEC is also “amazing.”

Finebaum didn’t appreciate Rhule’s comments, and decided to fire back on Friday morning’s episode of “Get Up” on ESPN. He brought up Nebraska’s lackluster 5-7 record in 2023 as well as Rhule’s failed tenure as a head coach with the Carolina Panthers.

“Matt, stay in your lane,” Finebaum said. “Job 1: Win enough games to get to some stupid bowl game. Don’t worry about the big boys, because you’re not one of them. We saw what you did in the NFL. You were a complete disaster at Carolina. You somehow got this job in Nebraska. And you’re talking like you belong at the table with Ohio State and Georgia. You don’t! Just try to win maybe 6 games. Quit choking big games on the final play. And leave the punditry to the professionals. Thank you.”

Here’s video of Finebaum’s comments:

Rhule’s estimation that the Big Ten will get 4 College Football Playoff berths is not far off the consensus — at least in 2024. Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State are all currently favored to make the CFP this season, per the latest odds from FanDuel. A fourth team, Michigan, is +115 to make the CFP this season.

The SEC, of course, could also fight for 4+ College Football Playoff bids this season. Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Missouri, LSU, Tennessee and Texas A&M all have CFP aspirations in 2024.
