Sherrone Moore dissects strengths of Davis Warren after winning QB battle

Sherrone Moore had a tricky quarterback battle on his hands during his first training camp as Michigan’s head coach. The starting QB job eventually went to Davis Warren, though Alex Orji did see action in Week 1.
While the Wolverines did wind up winning 30-10 vs. Fresno State, the offensive performance left something to be desired, especially with the downfield passing attack. Warren threw an interception, and the bulk of Michigan’s passing production flowed through tight end Colston Loveland.
When it comes to the QB battle, Moore disputed the idea that Orji somehow lost the starting role. He instead described the situation as Warren just practicing better leading up to the season opener with a better completion percentage in training camp.
Michigan HC Sherrone Moore on QB decision says Davis Warren just practiced better down the stretch of fall camp and the completion percentage was higher. Wasn’t a situation of Alex Orji losing the job. Moore says Davis Warren won it.

Moore also praised Warren’s unique journey for preparing him to handle the rigors of college football. He also described Warren as the ultimate team competitor.
Sherrone Moore on how Davis Warren’s journey helps him: “Nothing fazes him. Even that interception is nothing compared to what he’s been through.”
“Doesn’t blame, doesn’t point fingers, is all about doing what he can to help the team win.”

That may be the case, but Warren will need to find more consistency if Michigan wants to unlock the potential on offense. He also faces a stiffer test in Week 2 with a visit from Texas, an elite program looking to make it back-to-back trips to the College Football Playoff.
We’ll see if Warren can handle the job or if a QB controversy develops in Ann Arbor.
