Latest statement from Ohio State addresses media availability, practices under Ryan Day

In a move unlikely to surprise anyone, Ohio State has suspended media availability of players and coaches for the time being. Practices will also be closed.
It’s the latest official statement from the school after head coach Urban Meyer was placed on administrative leave. It’s not surprising that OSU does not want players faced with questions about a very sensitive matter. Reporters would almost certainly ask players for their thoughts on Meyer’s situation, also if they were aware of allegations against Smith and if they think Meyer was aware. Rather than cause any more headline headaches for either party, players and coaches will not be talking to the media.
The statement offers little insight into the situation beyond the fact that nothing appears to be set for the remainder of fall camp or the 2018 season. If Ryan Day is acting coach for the season, there will undoubtedly be a widely covered press conference. Same for if Meyer returns to the job or another coach is hired.
Closed practices are a shame for the fans who are hoping to learn about the team’s progress from observations made watching drills and scrimmages.
OSU’s statement reads as follows:
The university is committed to supporting our student-athletes as they prepare for the upcoming semester. Due to ongoing investigation, football coaches/student-athletes will not be available for interviews until further notice and all practices will be closed.
