Urban Meyer is currently employed by Ohio State (albeit on administrative leave). Ryan Day is the acting coach of the Buckeyes. Those two facts are doing little to slow the rumor mill.

Media members and oddsmakers will link plenty of names to the OSU job if the full-time position becomes open. On Thursday, Andrew Perloff of Sports Illustrated and “The Dan Patrick Show,” tweeted rumors that Iowa State’ head coach Matt Campbell would be the top candidate to replace Meyer if he is fired or resigns.

Friday was the opening day of fall camp at Iowa State, meaning Campbell would meet with the media. He knew reporters would seek a comment about Ohio State, so he addressed the rumors by declaring he would only answer questions about the Cyclones and no other institutions. He does not mention Ohio State by name, but it’s fairly he is referring to the situation in Columbus.

It’s easy to see why Campbell would be linked to an opening at OSU. Campbell has Ohio roots and at 38 years old has already notched noteworthy accomplishments as a head coach. In four seasons at Toledo, he went 35-15, taking the Rockets to back-to-back bowl games. Last season, he was named Big 12 Coach of the Year after guiding Iowa State to an 8-5 season.
