Jim Knowles and the Ohio State coaching staff did not hand out traditional Player of the Game Honors after Week 4. Instead, the Buckeyes were left with just co-offensive and special teams players recognized after the win over Marshall.

During his Tuesday press conference, Knowles was asked how the coaching staff arrived at the decision to avoid handing out a Player of the Game. For the defensive coordinator, it was rather simple.

“You gotta speak the truth,” Knowles explained.

Knowles went on to say some Buckeyes received the grade of champion but no one really wowed with a worthy performance.

“While we had some champions, (we) had no one that we thought really showed a silver bullet of the game performance,” said Knowles.

While Ohio State only allowed 14 points vs. Marshall, there were some issues early on. The Thundering Herd marched down the field on the first possession of the game and was able to convert crucial 3rd downs in the first half.

Marshall also scored touchdowns on its 2 drives into the red zone, so the Buckeyes will be looking to get off the field in key moments against Michigan State. We’ll see how OSU responds to that kind of challenge this weekend.

Ohio State heads into its first road game and first Big Ten game as a 24-point favorite per DraftKings for the matchup with Michigan State. Fans can take advantage of those odds with Tradition’s DraftKings Ohio bonus.
