ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) predicts the outcomes of every college football game each week.
Week 6 is no different, and the model’s predictions have now been released. Included in those predictions is the Indiana at Northwestern game.
Unfortunately for Northwestern, the model doesn’t foresee much of a game here. FPI gives the Hoosiers an 85.0% chance to win, meaning the Wildcats have just a 15% chance to pull off the upset.
It has not been an easy season for the Wildcats. The team narrowly defeated Miami (OH) in Week 1 and also has a win over Eastern Illinois. The team has losses to Duke and Washington and appears likely to pick up their 3rd loss this weekend.
The Hoosiers, meanwhile, have taken the college football world by storm this season in Curt Cignetti’s 1st season at the helm. The team is ranked as the No. 23 team in the nation after racing to a 5-0 start.
Cignetti’s squad has collected wins over FIU, Western Illinois, UCLA, Charlotte, and Maryland. Perhaps surprisingly, the team has the No. 9 offense in the country, averaging 513.0 yards per game. Kurtis Rourke is the No. 22 QB in the nation with 274.4 yards per game.
This means the Hoosiers could become bowl-eligible this weekend with a win over a conference rival. The Hoosiers haven’t reached a bowl game since 2020, so this is a notable accomplishment for the program.
The Hoosiers and Wildcats have played 83 times in history with the Wildcats picking up 47 wins compared to the Hoosiers’ 35. The 1945 meeting ended in a tie.
