An Indianapolis youth football coach was one of two people shot on Saturday night during an argument that took place following a game.
The incident occurred after 10 p.m. ET at Cardinal Ritter High School in the northwest part of the city, according to the Indianapolis Star. After the game, coaches and fans got into an argument, with Trevon Smith, a coach with the Indy Firehawks, getting shot. Smith required surgery, which was a success.
One of the parents in charge of the Firehawks, Tabatha Hardiman, said her 10-year-old son considers Smith a “protector.”
“When I talk to my son about it, he’s just like, ‘He’s gonna be OK. We’ll see him Tuesday.’ He’s just anxiously waiting for his coach to come back to the field,” Hardiman said.
According to the Star, the suspects have yet to be identified.
The shooting didn’t stop a event from taking place on Sunday as the Firehawks performed neighborhood outreach, giving away “food, clothing and household items” to the surrounding community.
