Curt Cignetti praises Indiana for ‘gutty’ team win over Washington

Curt Cignetti continues to take things on a week-by-week basis, and that approach continues to pay off for Indiana. The Hoosiers are now 8-0, matching the best start in program history from the 1960s.
Saturday’s win against Washington truly involved a bit of everything. Indiana jumped on top with a pick-6 vs. the Huskies but saw the lead closed to 17-14 after an interception deep in Hoosier territory to begin the 2nd half.
After the game, Cignetti reflected on the afternoon as “gutty” for the way the Hoosiers responded to their lead getting trimmed down:
“I thought it was a gutty win. Defense made some plays in the first half, the interception for a touchdown, the other interception. We come out on offense, first play of the 3rd quarter on our own 25 and throw an interception. So the defense wasn’t perfect, but they had a lot of stops,” said Cignetti. “Offensively, we adjusted and ran the ball.”
As for that offense, Cignetti explained how a shift in the Huskies led Indiana to begin pounding the ball on the ground. It paid off with the Hoosiers sucking the game clock down and building a 31-17 lead at the buzzer.
“We weren’t throwing the ball effectively, it’s not that it wasn’t there,” said Cignetti about Indiana’s early work against Washington’s zone defense. “Finally we went ‘Downhill run game, let’s go.’ So, good team win.”
