Dan Lanning and Oregon reached the top spot in the AP poll ahead of Saturday’s game against Illinois. After a 38-9 win over the No. 20 Illini, the Ducks will be staying at No. 1 when the new rankings are released on Sunday.

Dillon Gabriel threw for 291 yards and 3 touchdowns while the Ducks posted 229 yards on the ground, outgaining the Illini 527-293.

Despite the No. 1 ranking, there’s still plenty in play for the Ducks, who improved to 8-0 and took a step closer to booking a trip to the Big Ten Championship Game in their first season in the conference — along with their first possible College Football Playoff berth since 2014.

“They’ve put themselves in a position to have that opportunity, but that’s all it is, an opportunity,” Lanning said. “Success only matters if you’re satisfied, and I know our team is not.”

Oregon is on the road in Week 10 as it travels to face Michigan, then hosts Maryland and plays Wisconsin on the road before ending the regular season in Eugene with its annual rivalry game against northern neighbor Washington.

The path to Indianapolis, and the CFP, is clear for the Ducks, and Lanning’s team is clicking as the 2024 season reaches the home stretch in November.
