Jeremiah Smith has officially broken Cris Carter’s freshman receiving mark, surpassing the program legend during Saturday’s matchup between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Here’s a look at the catch that Smith broke the record on. Quarterback Will Howard found Smith for a long gain on a first-down reception at the tail end of the third quarter:

Smith came into the game totaling 35 receptions for 623 yards with 8 touchdowns. He finished the win over the Nittany Lions with 4 catches for 55 yards, leading the Buckeyes in receiving while averaging 13.8 yards per reception.

Carter’s previous freshman record was 648 yards. Smith also has tied Carter with 8 receiving touchdowns, needing just 1 touchdown for the outright freshman record with the Buckeyes. Saturday marked the first game of the season without a touchdown for Smith.

The ceiling is sky-high for young wideout, who some have already labeled as a generational talent. Clearly, he is backing it up.

Clearwater Central Catholic coach Chris Harvey, who has a good deal of familiarity with former NFL standout Randy Moss, sees a comparison between Smith and Moss, which he voiced in a recent interview with ESPN.

“You saw what [Moss] did to professional DBs,” Harvey said. “I love my home state. But we’re not West Virginia in Florida. We’ve got dudes — and Jeremiah Smith made us look like the West Virginia high school DBs.”

Ohio State went on to defeat Penn State, 20-13 in Happy Valley.
