Aidan Chiles was injured during the 3rd quarter of Saturday’s home showdown with No. 13 Indiana, making an already hard situation 100 times harder for unranked Michigan State.
The sophomore quarterback was apparently hit by a Hoosiers defender and stayed on the field after the play. The injury appeared to involve his throwing hand or the wrist area. Chiles was briefly evaluated in the injury tent before heading to the locker room.
Chiles wasn’t having a particularly great day anyway, but his injury certainly didn’t help matters against undefeated Indiana, which started slowly by falling into a 10-0 hole before it got rolling. The Hoosiers piled up 47 points in a row after that early deficit, holding a 47-10 lead in the 4th quarter as they closed in on a 9-0 start.
Way back in the 1st quarter, Chiles’ 18-yard touchdown pass to freshman wideout Nick Marsh gave the Spartans that short-lived 10-0 lead with 2:39 left in the period. Then everything changed, as the Hoosiers seized control with a dominant 2nd quarter, and then it got worse for Michigan State when Chiles suffered the injury.
Chiles has started all 9 games this season for the 4-4 Spartans. Michigan State was down 30-10 midway through the 3rd quarter when he was injured, and then Indiana tacked on another 17 points as the rout was on in East Lansing.
Chiles was 16-of-24 passing for 193 yards, that 1 touchdown pass and 2 interceptions when he was forced to leave the game.
