Reports: Penn State backup QB suffers apparent injury

Penn State backup QB Tommy Stevens appears to have suffered a foot or leg injury as he was seen Saturday sporting a walking boot.

Reporters observing the Nittany Lions’ team photo day noted that Stevens had his right foot in a boot, similar to this spring.

The nature and severity of the injury have not been announced. For many teams, an injury to the backup quarterback is not significant, especially when the starting quarterback is a potential Heisman Trophy candidate (such as Trace McSorley). But, a severe injury to Stevens could be a big loss as the backup signal-caller is also used in Penn State’s “LION” position. Many expected Stevens, a natural play-maker, to get a decent share of touches in the “LION” position this fall.

For now, the hope is that the injury is not serious.

Some photo day observations: QB Tommy Stevens has his right foot in a boot and DE Shane Simmons has his left foot in a boot. DE Torrence Brown is in a polo and pants like Ryan Buchholz and the rest of the staff.
