SEC teams have not had the most successful postseason in 2024. The conference has had 5 teams play against Big Ten teams in either bowl games or the College Football Playoff, and the B1G teams are 4-1 in those matchups.
The trend started when Ohio State dominated Tennessee in the first round of the Playoff. Then, USC defeated Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl. On Tuesday, Michigan took down Alabama and Illinois defeated South Carolina. The SEC’s lone win against the conference came in the Music City Bowl when Mizzou knocked off Iowa.
As a result, fans on social media are having quite a time poking fun at SEC football.
So if Michigan wasn’t a noteworthy win for Indiana…
…then a Michigan loss for Alabama is surely a really bad loss for Alabama and the SEC, no?

I am SHOCKED that two of these SEC teams people wanted in the playoffs lost to mid Big Ten teams. But remember-only the SEC should get the benefit of the doubt and not the lowly Big Ten…🤪 pic.twitter.com/o9jAomPNd1

I never want to hear about how hard the SEC is ever again.
Try playing 9 Big Ten games.

People don’t like to admit this, but not all FBS conferences are created equal, and the Committee needs to factor this in. Going forward, let it be known that a 5-loss team in the Big Ten is better than a 3-loss team in the SEC.

Every time I turn around an SEC team that was supposedly “One of the best teams” that was left out of the CFB Playoff, is losing to another Big Ten team.
Thoughts @finebaum?
Either way, Happy New Year college football fans! 🎆🎊 🥳 pic.twitter.com/qoCUqKg60X

Illinois wins over S Carolina.
A supremely depleted Michigan roster takes down Bama.
USC beat A&M.
Ohio State destroyed Tennessee.
The only Big Ten loss to the SEC this bowl season was a 3point Iowa loss to Mizzou.

Bad day for the #SEC homers who cried for a month! Maybe the committee knew what they were doing! 🤷🏻♂️😂 pic.twitter.com/efWXIklyMX

SEC fans threw an absolute toddler tantrum because Alabama didn't get into the playoff ahead of a one loss Big Ten team, then Tennessee, Texas A&M and Alabama went 0-3 against Ohio State, USC and Michigan with SC and Michigan playing mostly backups

Big Ten is 4-1 vs the SEC in bowl season so far.
But we have to remember the rules. If the SEC wins they were proving a point. If they lose, it didn’t matter to them.

Notably, SEC teams are 5-1 in postseason games against non-B1G teams. Florida, Texas, LSU, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas each won their bowl games, while Oklahoma lost to Navy. The final bowl game for an SEC team (outside of the CFP) is the Gator Bowl between Ole Miss and Duke.
Meanwhile, Texas and Georgia are still alive in the CFP. The Bulldogs are set to take on Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl while the Longhorns will play Arizona State in the Peach Bowl.
As many fans and media members have pointed out, 2 SEC teams that some thought should be in the Playoff lost their bowl games. Alabama received the most support to be in the Playoff, but the Crimson Tide managed just 13 points in a ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan. South Carolina also received some love, but the Gamecocks lost 21-17 to Illinois in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
