Urban Meyer will miss the first three games of the 2018 season, as Ohio State announced the head coach’s punishment was a three-game suspension at a Wednesday evening press conference. The official length of the suspension is Aug. 31-Sept. 16.

The investigation found that Meyer and AD Gene Smith did not report the 2015 investigation into Zach Smith’s alleged domestic abuse to compliance as investigators “believe they should have.”

A report from Brett McMurphy alleged that Meyer had knowledge of a history of domestic abuse accusations against former assistant coach Zach Smith, but continued to keep him on staff. At B1G Media Days in July, Meyer said he had no knowledge of the situation. The McMurphy report referred to an “arrest” (as it was marked on the police report he received). In fact, Smith was not arrested, but only investigated. Because of the difference in what was reported and the facts of situation, the investigators believe that Meyer did not deliberately lie at B1G Media Days.

Meyer was placed on administrative leave while Ohio State hired an independent working group to investigate the situation. The head coach was away from the Buckeyes for more than two weeks.

The Ohio State Board of Trustees took all day Wednesday to discuss the decision. There were reportedly tensions between the trustees, Ohio State University President Michael Drake and Meyer, which added to the length of the deliberations.

Ohio State opens the season on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Oregon State. In Week 2, the Buckeyes step into conference play, hosting Rutgers. Week 3 features a trip to Arlington, Texas to face TCU at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
