Brett McMurphy has been the lead reporter on the Zach Smith, Urban Meyer and Ohio State scandal that stole the spotlight this offseason. After his bombshell report a month ago, the saga ended with Meyer receiving a three-game suspension for the 2018 season.

After Ohio State announced Meyer’s punishment, McMurphy was asked for his thoughts on the situation and whether he was surprised that the Buckeyes’ head coach still had a job.

McMurphy, who now works at Stadium, said he was surprised by the decision.

“The first thing that jumped out to my mind is ‘how is Urban Meyer still coaching at Ohio State?” McMurphy said. There were numerous instances in the report where he could be fired for not reporting specific things to compliance. He obviously covered up a lot of Zach Smith’s transgressions. I mean, there are multiple examples of this and he continued to either look the other way, cover it up or tell him ‘if you do this again, I’m gonna fire you.”

To conclude his statements on Ohio State’s decision, McMurphy said “Ultimately, Ohio State decided football matters over everything.”
