Some people really love preseason rankings. It’s the best way to start the early season trash talk before the year actually kicks off. But it’s something that’s more for the fans than the players and coaches.

And in case you didn’t believe that, Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson confirmed it on Monday.

While meeting with reporters, Thorson was asked about the preseason rankings. Northwestern was not listed in the top 25 despite riding the nation’s longest winning streak entering the year.

“Preseason rankings are a bunch of trash,” Thorson said.

Northwestern isn’t new to being left out of the national conversation and has played the role of underdog pretty well under head coach Pat Fitzgerald.

It’s clear that Thorson and the Wildcats are more concerned with taking care of business on the field than what people are assessing this early in the year.

Northwestern gets its first chance to turn some heads on Thursday night when it travels to Purdue for the season-opening B1G clash.
