Michigan is marching on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but the 5-seed Wolverines held on to defeat 12-seed UC San Diego 68-65 late Thursday night.

U-M led for over 38 minutes of game time. The game was tied for just over 1 minute and UC San Diego led for 16 seconds of game time. But UM had its hands full Thursday night in Denver.

Michigan saw its lead disappear in the final minutes. Tyler McGhie, the game’s high scorer with 25 points, hit a 3-pointer to tie it up 63-63 with 3:05 to go. He scored the next 2 points, hitting a jumper to put UC San Diego ahead 65-63 with 2:29 to go.

Despite a rough stretch to close it out, the Wolverines were able to rally for the win. Michigan made just 1 of its last 7 field-goal attempts, missing its last 4. But the make was a big one.

Tre Donaldson hit a 3-pointer to put U-M back up 66-65 with 2:13 to go.

Donaldson’s 3-pointer was the last field goal made in the game.

With 20 seconds left, Vladislav Goldin made a pair of free throws to extend Michigan’s lead to 68-65, the game’s final score. Goldin was Michigan’s high scorer with 14 points.

Michigan advances to play 4-seed Texas A&M in the Round of 32 on Saturday.
