Mike Locksley was named Maryland’s interim head coach after Randy Edsall was fired in 2015. But it wasn’t until 4 years later, after leaving to become offensive coordinator at Alabama, that he returned to coach the Terrapins on a permanent basis.

Mike Locksley Bio
The 2025 season will be a pivotal one for Mike Locksley at Maryland. After appearing to make progress by winning 23 games and earning 3 straight bowl victories between 2021-23, his Terrapins took a major step backward by going 4-8 overall and winning only 1 conference game to finish 17th in the newly expanded 18-team Big Ten.
Some of the drop-off can be traced to the departure of quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who finished his career as Maryland’s all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns, total offense and total touchdowns. But quarterback play wasn’t the only area that held the Terps back in 2024. They also ranked 17th in the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing better than 30 points per game, and they were the third-most penalized team in the league.
With 21 players having left the program through the transfer portal in the offseason, Locksley has an opportunity to reshape his roster and engineer a quick turnaround. But the pressure will be on.
Locksley has seen two other Maryland coaches in similar situations. And things didn’t go well for either one. In 2000, he was the Terps’ running backs coach and recruiting coordinator when Ron Vanderlinden was fired. He stayed on for another 2 seasons under Vanderlinden’s replacement Ralph Friedgen before leaving to take a series of assistant coaching positions at Florida, Illinois and New Mexico.
The former Towson State defensive back returned to Maryland as offensive coordinator in 2012 and finished out the 2015 season as the interim head coach after Edsall got his pink slip after 6 games.
Prior to returning to College Park as the Terps’ permanent head coach, Locksley helped revive his career as a member of Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama. He held multiple roles for the Crimson Tide from 2016-18, helping Alabama capture the 2017 national championship as co-OC and WRs coach.]fter an 0-4 start to the 2011 season.
Locksley’s 33 total wins as a head coach at Maryland currently ranks seventh on the program’s all-time list. He is also 1 of just 5 head coaches in Terrapin history to record multiple bowl victories.
