Buzz Williams spurned the SEC after watching his season at Texas A&M come to a close. Shortly after being eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, Williams headed to Maryland, where he replaced Kevin Willard, who departed for Villanova.

The move was a surprising one for some, especially after Williams built the Aggies into a program that made it to 3 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. However, he does have time in the region after spending 5 seasons at Virginia Tech. That time spent with the Hokies will only aid his transition to the Big Ten, and college basketball insider Jon Rothstein believes Williams is primed for a big run with the Terps.

In fact, Rothstein described Maryland as the best job Williams will have since his time as a head coach at Marquette:

“This is the best job Buzz Williams has had since his first big-time job when he was the head coach at Marquette. You know, he has roots recruiting the DMV area from his time at Virginia Tech,” described Rothstein.

The analyst went on to explain Maryland’s starving fanbase, and he expects Williams to deliver some big-time results for the program:

“Buzz Williams is one of the most unique characters in college basketball, but the one thing that always resonates is his ability to win,” said Rothstein. “I expect a lot of time in the last 15 years going down I-95 to spend practices at Maryland practices and games, this fanbase is starving — starving — for a consistent winner and a personality that is going to embrace College Park. Buzz Williams is going to win big at Maryland.”

Williams has truly won at every major stop in his head coaching career, delivering 12 NCAA Tournament appearances across 17 seasons at Marquette, Virginia Tech, and Texas A&M. However, he has only made one Elite Eight trip in those appearances.

Will Maryland be the stop that Williams is finally able to break through with a trip to the Final Four?
