Penn State’s offensive line room for 2025 is about to take a hit, with tackle/guard JB Nelson expected to submit his paperwork to enter the transfer portal.
Nelson’s expected departure from Happy Valley was reported on Monday by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.
The loss of Nelson is a big one for Penn State — literally. He is 6-foot-5 and 325 pounds, and Nelson has shown himself to be a starting-caliber talent. He played in 27 games for James Franklin’s program over the past 2 years and made 8 starts during that time.
Nelson’s reported departure also stings for Penn State because he’s a Pittsburgh native who’s choosing to go elsewhere to continue his collegiate career. The Nittany Lions are also losing a player with great versatility, with Nelson contributing at tackle and guard during his time in State College.
Nelson has 1 more season of eligibility and apparently won’t be spending it at Penn State. He played his high school football at Mt. Lebanon before going the junior college route at Lackawanna Community College for 2 years to begin his collegiate career.
Nelson then joined the Nittany Lions before the 2022 season and has dealt with numerous injuries during his time in Happy Valley. Still, Nelson was a unanimous All-Big Ten honorable mention selection in 2023 and played in all 16 games last season.
But Nelson played fewer snaps despite how long Penn State’s season went in 2024, and now he’s apparently searching for another fresh start to end his whirlwind of a collegiate career.
