Michigan got a big boost to its running back depth for this coming season with the commitment of UMass transfer CJ Hester.

Hester’s agent, Zach Cardenez, told Rivals.com’s Adam Friedman of Hester’s commitment to Michigan on Saturday night.

Hester rushed for 530 yards and 4 touchdowns last season at UMass, and now he’ll be stepping up in competition a great deal with his transfer to big-time college football in the Big Ten.

Hester is 5-foot-11, 190 pounds and while he comes to Michigan from faraway UMass, he’s originally from Big Ten country as a Cincinnati native. Hester also announced his commitment with a statement on his social media account.

“Beyond blessed to announce my commitment to the University of Michigan! Thank you to everyone who’s supported me on this journey. Maize and Blue, let’s work!” wrote Hester in a post that was accompanied by a photo of him with Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore.

Hester showed last season he could produce against big-time competition, rushing for 74 yards and a touchdown in a November loss at Georgia.

Hester’s move to Michigan is a sort of full-circle moment, as he played at Western Michigan as a freshman in 2023. Hester played in 7 games that season and had 29 carries for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Now, he’s arrived back in the state to continue his collegiate career in the Big Ten.
