The running back position has been an area of change for Ohio State, and the Buckeyes are reportedly losing a depth piece from the room in the transfer portal.
According to On3 Sports, veteran running back TC Caffey is entering the portal after 3 seasons with the Buckeyes. Caffey originally joined the program as an in-state walk-on in the class of 2022.
As a freshman, Caffey rushed for 66 yards, including a long touchdown run, but has not seen action since the 2022 season. He was expected to be a depth piece behind Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson last season, but a pre-season injury sidelined Caffey.

With Judkins and Henderson both off to the NFL Draft, the RB will include new feature pieces in 2025 for Ryan Day and his offense. A couple of youngsters, James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon, figure to be some of the leaders in the backfield after limited action last season.
To supplement the group, Ohio State added veteran big-body back CJ Donaldson out of the portal from West Virginia. Donaldson has over 2,000 yards across 3 college seasons, including 30 rushing touchdowns for the Mountaineers.
While Caffey had a chance to contribute, his reported transfer makes it appear that he was destined to be relegated to a depth role yet again. We’ll see if he lands somewhere with a chance to see the field more in 2025.
