Alijah Arenas was involved in a serious car accident on Thursday but has made significant progress toward a recovery, according to a statement from his family.
According to reports, Arenas crashed his Cybertruck in Los Angeles early Thursday morning. Emergency crews responded to a call at approximately 4:55 a.m. Arenas was transported to a local hospital and was was put into an induced coma on Thursday.
On Friday morning, the Arenas family issued a statement saying Alijah is now out of that coma and has taken a “critical step forward” in his recovery.
The statement also includes a harrowing account from a bystander who pulled Arenas out of his car, which was on fire.
“I remember hearing banging on the car window, but I couldn’t see anything because the smoke was so thick,” the statement reads. “That’s when I realized someone was inside. I tried to break the window, but it wouldn’t give. Then I saw one of the windows was cracked just enough and we used everything we had to bend it and pull him out. The car was on fire. We just knew we had to get him out.”
The family also says Arenas was able to write a message asking if anyone was hurt during the accident.
Here’s the statement in full from the Arenas family:
Arenas is the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas. He’s also a 5-star high school basketball prospect who is currently committed to USC.
