Michigan signs 5th-year transfer QB with stops at Miami, Mizzou, ECU

Jake Garcia has landed in Michigan as his new home.

Garcia, a former quarterback at Miami, Mizzou and East Carolina, entered the NCAA transfer portal in April. He was announced by Michigan as a signee on Monday.

Garcia memorably transferred before his college football career even started. He made headlines moving from California to Georgia to play during the COVID-19-impacted 2020 high school football season. In a controversial move, Garcia’s parents legally separated so the move to Georgia would be a “bona fide move” to meet football eligibility requirements.

Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, is where Garcia finished his high school career. He remained a highly rated prospect, on the 247Sports Composite with grades of 4-stars, the No. 5 recruit in Georgia, No. 8 quarterback and No. 48 prospect overall in the Class of 2021.

Miami landed Garcia’s Letter of Intent in the 2021 recruiting cycle. Due to injury, Garcia played in only 1 game of UM’s 2021 season, allowing him to take a redshirt and extend his eligibility.

In 2022, Garcia made 8 appearances for the Hurricanes. He was 68-of-115 passing for 803 yards, 5 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

After the 2022 season, Garcia transferred to Mizzou. He did not record any statistics during 2023 as a Tiger.

Garcia spent the 2024 season at ECU. He played in 6 games, going 109-of-181 passing for 1,426 yards with 8 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
