Zach Edey just wrapped up his rookie NBA season after a dominant career at Purdue. However, the star big man will have to account for a driving-related charge that he picked up in Indiana this spring.

According to Ron Wilkins with the Indy Star, Edey received a reckless driving charge during a traffic stop on May 1 in the southern part of Indiana’s Tippecanoe County. According to documents obtained by the Indy Star, police say Edey was clocked at 101 MPH in a 55 MPH zone while driving his Kia Sorento north on I-25.

The incident occurred at 7:03 pm, and Edey told police he was passing a car as the reason for his speed. The reckless driving charge is a misdemeanor.

With the Boilermakers, Edey developed into one of the most dominant players in all of college basketball. He was a consensus All-American while capturing the National Player of the Year honors in back-to-back years (2023 and 2024), and he led the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding both years. During the 2023-24 season, Edey led Division I with 25.2 points per game.

Despite his accomplishments in the college game, Edey experienced many detractors of his NBA outlook. The Memphis Grizzlies felt strongly enough about the 7-foot-4 big man to draft Edey with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

In his first season, Edey went on to appear in 66 games with 55 starts. He was named to the All-Rookie team after averaging 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1 assist for the Grizzlies. Edey specifically showcased a developing touch as a shooter, going 34.6% from 3-point range.
