Former Ohio State offensive lineman Kirk Barton has been charged with aggravated vehicular manslaughter following a fatal car accident in Dublin, Ohio, according to a report from NBC4.

Barton, 40, is suspected of driving a Ford F150 Raptor pickup truck “at a high rate of speed” before striking another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, 24-year-old Ethan Perry, was pronounced dead at the scene. Barton sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from a local hospital into police custody, according to the report.

Barton was charged with a second-degree felony count of aggravated vehicular manslaughter as a result of operating a vehicle while under the influence.

An All-American right tackle for the Buckeyes from 2003-07, Barton has had a checkered career since leaving Columbus. NBC4 reports that Barton has multiple previous traffic-related offenses. In 2018, he was arrested and charged with felony assault of a police officer. Authorities alleged that an intoxicated Barton slammed a car door on a deputy’s arm. The charges were later reduced.

Barton was also barred from covering Ohio State events in person in 2021 after the school found his website, Buckeye Scoop, used unauthorized practice footage to reveal internal team information.

Barton was drafted in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He appeared in 1 NFL game during his career before returning to Ohio State as a graduate assistant.
