Bret Bielema and the Illinois Fighting Illini are coming off a special 2024 season, and they enter this year with even higher expectations. Before the season gets started, Bielema is at the B1G Media Days in Las Vegas, where he is speaking with media all across the country about all things college football.

On Tuesday, Bielema was asked about what college athletics have become, and he gave an answer only the Illinois coach could give.

“Holy shit, the world has changed,” Bret Bielema said.

While he said it differently than many other coaches across the country would say it, this is the belief and reaction of coaches in the sport. Bielema played his college football as a defensive lineman at Iowa from 1989 to 1992. He had to work his way up the depth chart, and started his career as a walk-on.

He has been very vocal this off-season about the state of college football, as he accused Georgia of tampering with former Illinois running back Josh McCray.

This Illinois team could be one of the best for the program in quite some time. Luke Altmyer could be one of the best quarterbacks in the B1G and the defense has a chance to be a special group.

The Fighting Illini figure to be a team that is there in October and November, possibly playing for a spot in the CFP. If that happens, there will be plenty of more options for Bielema to deliver in front of the mic.
