Justin Fields was carted off the practice field on Thursday at training camp with what some feared would be a significant injury. The New York Jets announced later in the day that Fields had suffered a dislocated toe on his right foot but would not miss significant time.
As it turns out, he didn’t miss any time at all.
On Friday, when the Jets returned to the field, Fields was right there with them.
The Jets signed Fields to a 2-year, $40 million deal this past offseason. He was expected to come in and be the team’s starting quarterback, but Thursday’s injury scare and the subsequent speculation about a potential season-ending issue led to plenty of concern in New Jersey.
New York has NFL veteran Tyrod Taylor on its roster, alongside former Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez and rookie Brady Cook. Without the former Ohio State standout, the Jets would have been in a difficult spot at the all-important position.
But that worry seems to have dissipated as quickly as it appeared.
Fields, the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, is entering his fifth NFL campaign this fall. He spent his first 3 seasons with the Chicago Bears before being dealt to the Pittsburgh Steelers last year.
With Pittsburgh, Fields enjoyed the most efficient season of his career. He set career-highs for completion rate (65.8%) and adjusted yards per pass attempt (7.2). He also had just 1 interception in 161 pass attempts. The 0.6% turnover rate marked the first time in his career he ended a season below 2.4%.
Fields and the Jets are scheduled to begin the 2025-26 regular season against the Steelers on Sept. 7.
