Ohio State revealed over the weekend that its traditional Block O honor for this season will go to linebacker Sonny Styles.

The senior from Pickerington, Ohio, grew up in the state and now will get one of the highest honors that an Ohio State Buckeye can receive. Getting to wear the Block O in 2025 shows that Styles has earned his program’s respect for his play on the field as well as his maturity and leadership off it.

Styles not only is the newest Block O recipient, he’s a legacy of another kind at Ohio State. That’s because he’s the son of former Buckeye Lorenzo Styles Sr. and the brother of current Ohio State defensive back Lorenzo Styles Jr.

Sonny Styles had exactly 100 tackles last season, 49 of them solo, in helping lead the Buckeyes to a national championship. He added 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery on that phenomenal Ohio State defense last season, all while transitioning from safety to linebacker.

This season, he’ll be trying to help the Buckeyes defend that title while donning the treasured Block O jersey.

The Ohio State football social media account celebrated Styles’ honor with this stirring video:

The Block O tradition began in 2020 as a way to honor former Buckeye Bill Willis, an All-American and national champion defensive end who played at Ohio State from 1942-44. Willis helped break the color barrier as a member of the Cleveland Browns and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Styles is the 6th recipient of the Block O honor, and with that honor he’ll have a whole new level of motivation to play with this fall.
