MGCB Makes Tackling Illegal Online Gambling In Michigan A Priority

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is taking an assertive approach in its efforts to combat illegal online gambling in the state.

In recent years, the MGCB has issued cease-and-desist letters to over 150 different online operators. These operators were at one point offering their services in the state without a license.

When it comes to legal online casinos in Michigan, the MGCB has permitted 15 licensed operators. Each went through a rigorous licensing process and pays tax revenue back to the state each month.

As more and more states look to bottle up illegal online gambling, Michigan and the MGCB are providing an example of leadership in that area.

MGCB has Taken Action Against Over 150 Illegal Operations

The latest round of cease-and-desist letters came last week, when four were issued, all operated by Tech Zone, Inc.

“These offshore operators lure players with flashy ads and promises of big winnings, but in reality, they put consumers at serious financial and personal risk,” Henry Williams, MGCB Executive Director, said in a press release of the most recent actions. “We will continue to take strong action against unlicensed sites to ensure gambling in Michigan is legal, fair, and secure.”

With these most recent additions, the MGCB has issued cease-and-desist letters to the following illegal online operators:

No Player Protection with Illegal Online Gambling

The MGCB stresses their efforts to stop illegal online gambling is to protect Michigan residents.

When users turn to illegal gambling sites, they do so without protection from regulated bodies like the MGCB.

Games offered by illegal sites aren’t subject to independent testing to assure fairness to players. There is also no legal recourse these sites have to face if a consumer has a dispute over their experience or potential winnings.

Players also have their data further subjected to being stolen. That can lead to fraud, identity theft, or lost of funds.

Michigan has typically had 15 online casino operators in the state.

However, one operator, SI Casino, recently ceased operations, leaving the window open for a new company to take over the license if it passes MGCB approval.

Currently, there are 14 online casino apps available in the state, including DraftKings Casino and BetRivers Casino. Overall, here’s the 14 iGaming platforms in Michigan:

  • BetMGM
  • BetParx (Play Gun Lake)
  • BetRivers
  • Caesars Palace
  • DraftKings
  • Eagle Casino & Sports
  • Fanatics
  • FanDuel
  • FireKeepers
  • Four Winds
  • Golden Nugget
  • Hollywood Casino
  • Horseshoe
  • PokerStars

Each of these sites is regulated under the watch of the MGCB and subject to fines or more should they not be operating under the rules set forth by the state.

Should a player have a dispute, they can contact the MGCB to have it addressed.
