Welcome to the world of college football.

And, hello to the controversy that surrounds targeting calls. The 2018 season has just begun and Michigan is already suffering from what was called as a targeting penalty in the first quarter of its season opener against Notre Dame.

Josh Metellus, a safety for the Wolverines, was trying to make a play on Fighting Irish tight end Alize Mack as he was coming down with the ball. Unfortunately for Metellus, his shoulder collided right with the Mack’s head.

The play was then reviewed and Metellus got called for targeting, resulting in his ejection.

Take a look:

Intentional or not, Metellus is gone from the game. Did he deserve an ejection? That’s up for debate.

Is everyone in favor of the rule? Probably not.

The Michigan-Notre Dame game can be seen on NBC.
