A veteran offensive mind is joining David Braun’s staff in Evanston. Northwestern football announced on Tuesday that it has hired Chip Kelly to be the program’s next Offensive Coordinator

Kelly brings a ton of experience to Northwestern football. Most recently, Kelly was Ohio State’s OC during the Buckeyes national championship run, and he served as the OC for the Las Vegas Raiders this regular season in the NFL.

Before both of those gigs, Kelly was a head coach for several different programs at the professional and collegiate levels. He started as Oregon’s head coach from 2009-2012 and eventually took a job in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and later the San Francisco 49ers. After a lone season with the Niners, Kelly was back in college as head coach of UCLA.

While Kelly had some up and down moments as a head coach, there’s no doubting his abilities as a play caller and offensive mind. Ohio State obviously won a national title with Kelly calling plays, and Oregon barely lost to Auburn in the national championship game in 2010 under Kelly’s watch.

2026 is going to be a big year for David Braun and Co. and Kelly’s hire is certainly a step in the right direction.
