Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May confirmed on Monday that the Wolverines plan to redshirt LJ Cason for the 2026-27 season due to the timing of his ACL injury suffered in late February.
May, when speaking with reporters such as On3’s Anthony Broome, insisted that the Wolverines have not yet scheduled Cason’s knee surgery because they want him to be with the team during the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.
All injuries are unfortunate, obviously, but Cason’s really stings. The second-year guard served as a perfect backup to Elliott Cadeau as a savvy, efficient scorer and a stout on-ball defender. More importantly, Cason was playing his best ball during the final stretch of Big Ten play and is an important piece for a Michigan team that could very well win it all when it’s all said and done.
With Roddy Gayle out of eligibility, the Wolverines are going to have to dip into the transfer portal for a guard next season. Of course, that’s not at the top of the priority list right now.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Friday against one of Ohio State, Iowa, Maryland or Oregon in the Big Ten tournament.
