No. 1 seed Michigan headlines 9 Big Ten teams heading to NCAA Tournament
No. 1 seed Michigan is the feature attraction from the Big Ten in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, but as Sunday afternoon in Chicago showed, the conference boasts plenty of other candidates to go deep into March and, just maybe, early April.
That’s because just before the Wolverines earned that top seed in the Midwest Region, Michigan was beaten by Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament title game. The Wolverines fell to the Boilermakers, 80-72, serving notice that Michigan is hardly the only Big Ten behemoth who can do some serious damage in the NCAA Tournament.
From a deep Big Ten basketball field, 9 teams were picked on Sunday night to play in the NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten was surpassed in bids only by the SEC, which sent 10 teams to the Big Dance.
Joining Michigan in the NCAA Tournament will be that Purdue team that outlasted the Wolverines on Sunday. The Boilermakers earned the No. 2 seed in the West Region, just moments after cutting down the nets in Chicago after that Big Ten Tournament title game victory.
Grabbing the No. 3 seed in the East Region was Michigan State. Joining the Spartans in the East Region among Big Ten teams is No. 7 seed UCLA and No. 8 seed Ohio State.
The West Region won’t just contain Purdue though among the stable of Big Ten teams, with Wisconsin earning the No. 5 seed.
In the South Region, Illinois grabbed the No. 3 seed, and the Fighting Illini were joined by No. 4 seed Nebraska and No. 9 seed Iowa.
It was a strong Big Ten this season, and that strength was rewarded on Sunday with those 9 big NCAA Tournament bids. Back to that Purdue team that won the Big Ten Tournament earlier Sunday and this telling fact — the Boilermakers were the No. 7 seed in their own conference tournament, and they ended up winning the tournament and getting a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, all in the same day.
That alone shows the depth of the Big Ten, and here is the NCAA Tournament bracket that contains those 9 Big Ten teams who are going dancing this March:
