Michigan gets commitment from 4-star in-state OT

Michigan football accomplished 2 huge things on the first Saturday of May, and it involved a very big young man.

The Wolverines got a commitment from 4-star offensive tackle Jakari Lipsey, with the mammoth 6-foot-5, 300-pounder telling On3’s Hayes Fawcett of his plans to head to Ann Arbor for the 2027 season. But besides the huge recruiting win of luring Lipsey, Michigan also kept one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the class from leaving the state.

Lipsey is a Kalamazoo product, and he had other major suitors like Big Ten rival UCLA, as well as SEC powerhouses LSU and Tennessee, so there was stiff competition for Michigan in keeping Lipsey close to home. In-state rival Michigan State was also in the mix, and so was Wisconsin, but those Big Ten programs lost out to Michigan on Saturday.

He was a target for Michigan even before Kyle Whittingham took over as head coach, but Whittingham’s new staff didn’t let up in their pursuit of Lipsey, and it has finally paid off. Lipsey is Michigan’s highest-ranked commitment in its Class of 2027, and he’s the Wolverines’ third in-state commit among their now 6 commits for the 2027 cycle.

That 2027 recruiting class now ranks 33rd in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Lipsey is currently rated the 115th-best player overall in the Class of 2027, he’s the 10th-best offensive tackle and the third-ranked player in the state of Michigan, according to those 247Sports Composite rankings.

Lipsey will be helping Michigan soon enough, but not in 2026. The Wolverines will be trying to get back to the top of the Big Ten without him this fall, and here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about their chances to do just that:
