Penn State will be trying to rebound from a disastrous 2025 season this fall, but on Friday afternoon it got a big-time boost for the 2027 season.

The Nittany Lions received a commitment from 3-star quarterback Will Wood, a top talent out of Xaverian Brothers in Westwood, Mass. On3’s Steve Wiltfong reported Penn State‘s big recruiting win, with the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder choosing to head to the Big Ten instead of the ACC, with North Carolina and Stanford also being in the mix.

Wood could’ve chosen to stay local and play at Boston College, too, but he picked Penn State, where Matt Campbell is taking over this season after the Nittany Lions fired James Franklin last fall and chose to go in another direction.

Penn State quarterbacks coach Jake Waters recruited Wood, and now he’ll get to coach him starting next fall. Wood’s prolific junior season at Xaverian Brothers elevated his status in the recruiting process among Power 4 programs, as he threw for 2,812 yards with a whopping 42 touchdowns to just 1 interception.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Wood is currently rated as the 490th-best prospect from the Class of 2027. He’s also the 29th-best quarterback in the class and the third-best player out of the state of Massachusetts, according to the Composite rankings.

Penn State now has 18 commits in a 2027 recruiting class that’s shaping up to be a top one. The 247Sports Composite rankings currently rates the Nittany Lions’ class as the 5th-best in the country, with Wood now in the fold for next fall.

Wood can’t help the Nittany Lions until 2027 at the earliest, but Penn State will be trying to return to relevance in the Big Ten and nationally in 2026. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the top teams in the mix to be the last one standing next January:
