Nebraska books trip to Women’s College World Series with run-rule win over Oklahoma State
Nebraska took no prisoners this weekend in front of its home fans, and now the relentless Cornhuskers are bound for the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
After an 8-1 victory over Oklahoma State in Game 1 of the Lincoln Super Regional on Friday, Nebraska did slightly better on Saturday and took slightly less time to do it. The Cornhuskers took down the Cowgirls, 9-1, in a 5-inning run-rule victory that sent them to Oklahoma State’s home state.
Nebraska (51-6) actually fell behind in the first inning on Saturday, allowing what would be Oklahoma State’s only run of the game. It didn’t faze the Cornhuskers, who stormed ahead with 2 runs in the third inning and a 7-run eruption in the fifth that produced the run-rule situation.
The offensive onslaught was launched by Hannah Coor, who tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning after smacking an RBI double. After making a huge diving catch in the fourth, Coor was back at it at the plate in the fifth, belting a solo homer to give Nebraska a 3-1 lead.
Coor’s big drive was only the beginning in that massive fifth inning for the Cornhuskers, who tacked on 6 more runs in the frame to pull away and start the celebration in Lincoln. Alina Felix continued the onslaught with a 2-run single to make it 6-1, before Lauren Camenzind brought the crowd to its feet with a 3-run homer that provided Saturday’s final margin.
While the Nebraska bats again performed in a big way, Alexis Jensen and Jordy Frahm took care of things on the mound for the Cornhuskers.
Now it’s onto the WCWS for Nebraska, which will face Arkansas to start play in Oklahoma City. It all begins on Thursday, but the celebration in Lincoln had already started on Saturday night.
