Michigan “is currently expected” to give true freshman quarterback Tommy Carr his first career start when the Wolverines face Indiana in Ann Arbor in Week 8, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz on Tuesday.

Kyle Whittingham initially started Bryce Underwood at quarterback in the Wolverines’ Week 7 game against Penn State. But after the sophomore went 5-of-11 for 43 yards and threw two interceptions in the first half, he was benched. Carr, the grandson of longtime Wolverines head coach Lloyd Carr, went 5-of-7 for 47 yards and ran four times for 36 yards and a touchdown as Michigan won 21-18.

Underwood, the No. 1 overall recruit in 2025 according to 247Sports, received the starting nod as a true freshman and totaled 2,428 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also ran 88 times for 392 yards and six touchdowns.

After Sherrone Moore’s firing and the subsequent hiring of Whittingham, Underwood remained with the Wolverines. But he has taken a step back. Through six games, he has passed for just 924 yards with five TDs and six picks. He has 223 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 60 carries.

But with the apparent decision to start Carr — at least for Week 8’s game against the Hoosiers — Underwood’s time with the Michigan program may end at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
