There’s a lot of Heisman Trophy buzz surrounding Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, and that hype will certainly grow after No. 4 OSU beat No. 9 Penn State this past weekend.

Haskins was great, throwing for 270 yards and three touchdowns in the epic win, but it’s not the OSU quarterback getting the accolades from Pro Football Focus after Week 5.

In fact, it’s his counterpart, Trace McSorley, who graded out the best per PFF:

Haskins may have gotten the win, but keep in mind PFF is a stat-based website and according to pure numbers and analytics, McSorley was excellent against Ohio State. He completed 16-of-32 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns (no interceptions). McSorley finished the game with a 145.7 passer rating and he had a long pass of 93.

Compare McSorley’s numbers to Shea Patterson, who checked in at No. 2, and you’ll get a good indication of how good the Penn State quarterback was. Patterson, in a 20-17 win over Northwestern, completed 15-of-24 passes for 196 yards, but he didn’t throw a touchdown.

Not mentioned in the PFF passing grades was 175 rushing yards on 25 carries from McSorley .

According to the grades, and according to the eye test, there’s no doubt that the Penn State quarterback deserves to be mentioned with Haskins when all is said and done. Haskins may have beaten him this time, but McSorley is not the quarterback to count out.
