An ex-Rice defensive lineman has been charged in the death of former teammate Blain Padgett, according to multiple reports.
Padgett, 21, was found dead in his bed in March. The cause of death was determined to be from the synthetic opioid carfentanil. His body was discovered after missing a team practice.
ABC 13 in Houston is reporting that former Owls defensive lineman Stuart Mouchantaf supplied the drug to Padgett. In Texas, the delivery of a controlled substance is a second-degree felony.
Padgett’s family believe their son thought he was taking hydrocodone. Carfentanil’s original purpose was to be used as an elephant tranquilizer.
Mouchantaf had purchased a one-way ticket to Lebanon, according to the ABC report.
Mouchantaf and Padgett were teammates on Rice’s 2015 team. Padgett was still on the Owls’ 2018 roster.
