WATCH: Official fails to award Iowa a timeout before late-game interception

The B1G may be sending an explanation letter to Kirk Ferentz’s office later this week.

Late in the fourth quarter, Iowa put together a 12-play, 72-yard drive, pushing the ball all the way down to the Penn State 3-yard line. Trailing 30-24, the Hawkeyes needed a touchdown and the extra point to regain a lead.

Right before the ball was snapped, though, it appears that the field judge was getting ready to call a timeout. As you can see in the video below, the field judge looks over to the Iowa sideline and begins to wave his arms as if to signal a timeout. Once the ball is snapped, he puts his arms down and allows the play to continue.

The two things happen almost simultaneously, but it appears that a timeout should’ve been awarded to the Hawkeyes.

Obviously that was a huge moment in the game. It’s also probably something that Iowa fans don’t want to see after the game.

The interception came on a first down play, meaning Stanley had plenty of options rather than throwing the ill-advised pass. He could’ve just run the football or thrown it out of the end zone. The Hawkeyes also had one final opportunity to win the game on the last possession, but came up short again.

Iowa dropped to 6-2 on the season and 3-2 in B1G play after falling to Penn State.
