The initial College Football Playoff rankings came out on Oct. 30 and Michigan was ranked No. 5 in the country.

The Wolverines won in Week 10, and won convincingly, beating down Penn State 42-7. LSU, who was ranked No. 3, dropped down in the rankings after getting shutout by No. 1 Alabama. This left an open spot in the Top 4, and on Tuesday, the committee agreed that Michigan deserved that open spot.

Notre Dame, who was at No. 4 a week ago, moved up into the No. 3 slot, which gave Michigan the opening at No. 4. Right behind Michigan, however, is No. 5 Georgia.

The Bulldogs look impressive as well, and many believe a one-loss Georgia team is better than a one-loss Michigan team.

After the rankings were revealed, a few ESPN college football analysts debated between the Wolverines and Bulldogs.

David Pollack talked more about Georgia:

“I do think five and four are debatable,” he said. “You look at Georgia and what they have done in the last two games, it’s pretty dang impressive. Both of them have good losses. You have a loss to LSU and a loss to Notre Dame with Michigan. I think you can make a case for Georgia at four.”

Joey Galloway is backing Michigan:

“It would be absolutely tough to move Michigan out of No. 4 with the way they are playing right now,” Galloway said. “Defensively, they remind me of what Alabama does and their front four gets after the quarterback. I wouldn’t imagine switching Michigan and Georgia right now.”

Kirk Herbstreit was in favor of the Wolverines as well:

“Don’t underestimate this Michigan team,” he said. “This defense is lights out. Now, their offense is championship caliber as well with Shea Patterson. I got no issue with Michigan sitting up there above Georgia.”
