Maryland (5-6, 3-5 Big Ten) was one two-point conversion away from knocking off No. 10 Ohio State (10-1, 7-1) in what would have been one of the biggest upsets in college football this season.
As he was all day, interim coach Matt Canada was very aggressive with his offensive play-calling and decided to end the game in the first overtime, going for two instead of attempting an extra point to head into a second overtime at 52-all; however, quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome’s pass to Jeshaun Jones was off target and the Terrapins lost.
Still, the Terps produced 535 yards of offense — 339 on the ground — and had a top-10 team on its heels for four-plus quarters. In a highly emotional, adversity-filled year, Canada had one message for his team after the tough loss:
He’s proud of them.
"They believed in each other. They leaned on each other. They trusted each other… I’m proud of them."

Regardless of whether Maryland would have escaped with the win or lost by 30, administration should strongly consider retaining Canada for the 2019 season and beyond. With everything the players and staff have went through this season, it’s remarkable that the team is still in contention for bowl eligibility with one game remaining on the schedule.
Maryland will need to beat No. 14 Penn State (8-3, 5-3) in Happy Valley next Saturday in order to receive a postseason invite for just the fourth time in the last eight years. And after this week’s performance, don’t be surprised if you the Terps playing another game in December.
