Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson has been named one of three finalists for the 2018 John Mackey Award, presented to the best tight end in college football. The announcement was made on Monday.
Hockenson and fellow Hawkeyes tight end Noah Fant were both named semi-finalists for the prestigious award. Hockenson is hoping to become the second Iowa tight end to win the award, joining Dallas Clark, who was presented with honor in 2002.
The other two finalists are Kaden Smith from Stanford and Albert Okwuegbunam out of Missouri.
The honor is certainly well-deserved for Hockenson, who has been one of the top tight ends in the B1G all season long. In 11 games, he’s hauled in 41 receptions for 663 yards and six touchdowns. He’s also been an exception blocker for Iowa, as well.
Hockenson has more receiving yards than any B1G tight end this fall. He ranks fourth nationally in that category.
In the B1G opener against Wisconsin, Hockenson hauled in three catches for 125 yards. Against Indiana, he caught four passes for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
