Rashan Gary’s mother took matters into her own hands after hearing some troubling comments on her son’s performance in 2018.
Jennifer Coney-Shepherd did not waste any time coming to defend her son’s honor. In a clip shared by radio host Jim Costa, Coney-Shepherd tackled questions head on about Rashan’s performance this season.
“Maybe you guys don’t understand football, that’s what I think,” Coney-Shepherd responded when asked if she had any thoughts about why he did not perform as well as some expected.
She went on to provide a breakdown of Don Brown’s defensive scheme and Gary’s assignment in 2018:
“Don Brown’s defense has an anchor end, which is Rashan, and a pass-rushing end, which is Chase (Winovich),” explained Coney-Shepherd. “Now, Chase is great…he gets to the quarterback…Rashan’s not a pass-rushing end, so for you to equate Chase with Rashan is kind of disheartening.”
When pressed about what his role would be in the NFL, Coney-Shepherd deferred. Instead, she pointed out that Gary did the job he was asked to do for Michigan’s defense. As such, she is proud of his performance for the Wolverines:
“When you say he ‘underhwhelmed expectations,’ well maybe you wanted him to get 15-20 sacks,” she replied. “And if he was a rushing end, then he would have. But he wasn’t, that wasn’t his job, and as a mom, I know my son did his job, and I know he did his job well.”
Needless to say, it is a great exchange. Coney-Shepherd admirably defended her son while providing an informed breakdown of his performance. You can hear the entire segment below:
When you call Rashan Gary overrated and his mom calls into your radio show. (Respect to her for calling in and defending him with actual football reasons. We eventually found some common ground) https://t.co/st77NNaLAD
