Michigan State is headed out West again.

On Sunday, the Spartans learned of their bowl destination, and they’ll be headed to San Francisco to take on Oregon in the Redbox Bowl on Dec. 31. Last year, MSU was in San Diego for the Holiday Bowl.

This season will mark the team’s 11th bowl trip in 12 seasons under head coach Mark Dantonio. And the Michigan State head coach is looking forward to the opportunity.

“Very excited to go to San Francisco, a place where our players have not been to play against an outstanding team,” Dantonio said, according to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press..

Michigan State finished the season 7-5 while Oregon ended the year 8-4. The Spartans are winners in five of their last six bowl appearances, including last season’s 42-17 victory over Washington State.

Dantonio believes that the matchup with Oregon is a battle of two national brands that will draw a big crowd on New Years Eve.

“Oregon’s got a national brand, we’ve got a national brand,” Dantonio said. “I think that matches up.

“There are Spartans everywhere…We are gonna draw.”

Michigan State didn’t quite live up to the sky-high expectations set at the beginning of the year. But Dantonio has said that there’s still a chance for his team to end on a positive note and send the senior class out on the right note.

“I don’t think there’s any question toward the end of the season, we didn’t play as good as we had during other points of the season,” Dantonio said. “I want to leave our season playing our best football.”
