When bowl matchups were announced on Selection Sunday, Miami head coach Mark Richt was a little surprised, just like the rest of us.

No, he wasn’t worried about which team earned the final spot in the College Football Playoff, but about the Hurricanes’ opponent in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Richt didn’t believe he’d be matched up with Wisconsin for a second straight season.

But on Dec. 27, Miami and Wisconsin will go head-to-head again in New York City. The two teams met in the Orange Bowl last season, a game the Badgers won 34-24.

“To play Wisconsin again, it’s rare to play anybody back-to-back in bowls,” Richt said during the Pinstripe Bowl news conference on Tuesday. “We played a great team last year and fell short.”

A trip to New York to play in a bowl game is an exciting experience for both teams, but it’s also a bit of a disappointment for both, as well. Wisconsin and Miami both started the 2018 season ranked in the top 10 nationally and were expected to make a run at a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Instead, the two 7-5 teams will compete for a chance to end the year with eight wins.

Based on last year’s matchup, Richt understand the challenges the Badgers present to Miami.

“When you play Wisconsin you’re playing a great team, a team that is used to winning,” Richt said. “We’re used to winning, too.”

Wisconsin and Miami will meet at Yankee Stadium on Dec. 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. ET.
