For all the talk about the letdown efforts from Michigan State and Ohio State, their two running backs did not deserve to be grouped into that discussion.

As a result, they both earned weekly B1G awards for bailing their teams out on Saturday. And as a result of a 10-6 opener in Madison, two guys from the same game earned B1G Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Here’s how the conference’s weekly awards shook out:

Offensive Player of the Week: Ezekiel Elliott, Ohio State RB

Co-Defensive Player of the Week: Desmond King, Iowa CB

Co-Defensive Player of the Week: Joe Schobert, Wisconsin LB

Special Teams Player of the Week: Sam Foltz, Nebraska P

Freshman of the Week: L.J. Scott, Michigan State RB

Elliott’s 274 yards rushing and three touchdowns earned him his first weekly award of the season. The junior tailback broke off touchdown runs of 55, 65 and 75 yards to become the first player in the last 10 years to score on three 50-plus-yard plays in one half. His 145.8 yards per game are tops in the B1G after five weeks.

King had nine tackles and two interceptions in Iowa’s 10-6 win against No. 19 Wisconsin. The junior defensive back leads the conference with five picks. His prowess helped lead the Hawkeyes to their first 5-0 start in six years and got them back into the top 25 for the first time in five years.

Schobert was a man amongst boys Saturday in a losing effort. He stuffed the stat sheet with eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and five quarterback hurries. The Wisconsin senior leads the country in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles.

Foltz also came up big in a losing effort for Nebraska. The Grand Island, Nebraska native booted nine punts for an average of 46.9 yards, five of which sailed for 50-plus yards. It’s the second time in his career he earned the weekly award.

Scott did his damage early and often for the Spartans. The freshman racked up a career-high 146 yards on just 18 carries and scored twice. It marked his first career 100-yard game, but it was his second time garnering B1G Freshman of the Week honors.
