Michigan State has added an FCS opponent to its 2023 schedule.

According to MLive.com, the Spartans will play Richmond on Sept. 9, 2023 in East Lansing. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.

Richmond will be the second FCS opponent Michigan State has on the schedule in a three-year span. It will also host Youngstown State on Sept. 11, 2021 at Spartan Stadium.

While the B1G has made a push to eliminate FCS scheduling, teams in the conference are permitted to add an FCS opponent to the calendar in years when they play just four league games at home.

The addition of Richmond gives Michigan State 11 games on the 2023 schedule. The Spartans will play nine B1G games and have one other non-conference contest scheduled, a Sept. 16 bout against Boise State. That game will also be played in East Lansing.

Michigan State finished the 2018 season with a 7-5 record. It will play Oregon in the Redbox Bowl on Dec. 31.

Richmond was 4-7 this season. It is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.
