One of the greatest strengths of Ohio State’s defense throughout the Urban Meyer era was along the front line. A huge reason for that is because of defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

With Meyer retiring after the Rose Bowl and Ryan Day taking over in Columbus, there’s been some concern whether Johnson would be retained or if there would be some turnover. According to Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young, Johnson plans on returning.

Young was one of the players who met with the media on Wednesday and talked about a conversation he had with Johnson, in which Johnson confirmed his return. It seems pretty clear that the OSU defensive line coach will continue in his role.

“If you know Coach J, he’s a man of his word,” Young told reporters.

Johnson has been Ohio State’s defensive line coach since 2014. Before arriving in Columbus, he had a lengthy stint at Penn State, serving in the same role in Happy Valley from 2000-2013. He joined Joe Paterno’s staff in 1996 coaching defensive ends and special teams.

Throughout his career, Johnson has developed several defensive lineman into NFL stars. His time at Ohio State is no different.

There’s been no official word on Johnson from Day or Ohio State, but Young is convinced that there won’t be any change before the 2019 season.
